The professional association for design. Knoxville Chapter

1:1:1 Event Sign Up Deadline

Friday, September 12, 2008 Knoxville Knoxville, TN

More Information

WHAT IS IT
A mentoring program begun by the AIGA Knoxville chapter to pair you up with a local AIGA Knoxville professional designer for a day. Come gain perspective and insight into the day of a designer in the "real world" and make a local connection. We have several area designers who have signed up to participate and we would like to match you up with someone based on common interests.

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO
The link below will send you to an online form that you need to fill out if you are interested in participating in the program. We have a limited number of professional participants, so slots will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis, with priority given to students in their senior year. This is limited to AIGA Knoxville student members only. You have until this Friday, September 12th to apply (which is of course free!).

THEN WHAT ....
Once you have registered, you will receive a follow-up email by the Monday, September 15th from the AIGA Knoxville Education Chair, introducing you to your mentor. Your mentor day should occur at an agreed upon day somewhere between September 15- October 17. We ask that only students who can make time in their schedule sometime during this timeframe to apply. It will be your responsibility to make contact with your assigned professional to get the ball rolling.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT
Well, that really depends on your AIGA mentor. Some work in big design agencies, others in smaller shops, while still others work in-house. They have been made aware of the program and the intention of an entire day, but they will also let you know if only the afternoon is the time to come to learn. It is a give and take between student and mentor, so go with the flow and see where it leads you.

WHY DO IT?
Because your teachers can only show you so much. Maybe you get to complete an internship as part of your studies, or maybe you don't get to do an internship or haven't gotten around to getting one yet, this is your chance to check out an area design environment. AIGA Knoxville also sees this as a great way to establish a local connection. All of the professionals who have volunteered their time have been overwhelmingly positive about wanting to make a connection with you, so take advantage of it.

LASTLY
Just like your mother says, we would ask that once your 1:1:1 day is complete, that you take the time to mail (as in good old US Post) your mentor a thank-you note. It’s just a professional way to round out an initial connection.

AIGA Knoxville is very excited to be kicking off this event this year and look to establish it as an expected event every Fall. We encourage the development of connections with your local design community to help you transition out into the design field.

Thanks, and we look forward to hearing from you!
